Online shopping is a global trend and it is definitely a social phenomenon in China in recent years. Last November 11th, 2017, that is the Singles’ Day online shopping festival, Chinese customs processed a total of 16.2 million orders, about 187 per second, total sales volume reached USD 27 billion just over 24 hours. Overseas exporters and importers also benefit from the growing popularity of online purchasing, according to China’s General Administration of Customs (GAC), cross-border trade performed significantly, its turnover rising 80.6% to USD 14.59 billion in 2017.
Because of looser online licensing regulations, and quicker customer procedures, China’s e-commerce imports rocketed by 116.4% to USD 9.15 billion last year, while exports surged 41.3% to USD 5.44 billion. Chinese customs handled 660 million manifests for e-commerce trade last year, which is 8.4 times as much as for conventional imports and exports.
China's customs authority will continue to boost cross-border e-commerce and improve services to meet Chinese demand to buy foreign goods online. The Ministry of Commerce in China stated that 220 countries and regions across the world were covered by China's cross-border e-commerce network as of 2016.
While in Hong Kong side, one of the largest online shopping malls – HKTV mall also reported that their sales in December 2017 reached USD 507,000 and the number of order had increased by 27%. Although it may not be a significant figure compared with China’s, considering the geographic size and convenience of Hong Kong market, it is expected that online shopping will continue to grow among Hong Kong shoppers.
Online shopping often involves small orders and targets end-consumers.
