Referring to The Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) of Chinese Government, China is to ban the import of 24 types of solid waste deemed to represent a particularly high risk of environmental pollution.
China has notified the World Trade Organization of the ban, which covers waste plastics, unsorted scrap paper, discarded textiles, vanadium slag and other kinds of waste. Imported solid waste, some of which had been useful as raw materials in the past, has caused damage to the country's environment and public health. Furthermore, some traders in and outside of China have illegally smuggled "foreign garbage" into the country for their own interests, giving rise to environmental woes, said by the spokesman of MEP.
The MEP launched a month-long campaign since July 1st to crack down on pollution in imported waste processing, with 420 inspectors selected from 27 provincial regions forming 60 teams to conduct full-scale examinations. China's medium-sized and large cities imported more than 46 million tonnes of waste in 2015 which was recycled into products including paper, plastics, aluminium and copper. However, the real amount of imported waste from overseas is probably much higher as some are brought into the country illegally. It has caused serious environmental problems and will be treated strictly in the near future.
